“IF YOU JUST GIVE ME 15-MINUTES, I GUARANTEE I CAN ADD 15-YEARS TO YOUR JIU JITSU CAREER.” —STEVE MAXWELL

This video arose from a spontaneous moment while Steve was demonstrating some exercises to some guys at Gracie Phoenix… and one of them was quick-witted (and had a video camera) leading to this amazing video promise wherein Steve has codified the moves that give you the added protection.

Steve’s BJJ Mobility is a dedicated 15-minute workout (though you can go longer if you wish.)… because — as Steve says — everyone has 15 minutes.

Stevel’s BJJ Mobility program can be used:

as a warm-up before you get on the mat
as a cool-down when you get off the mat
as a substitute when you can’t get to jiu jitsu class

NOTHING WILL STOP FATHER TIME — BUT YOU CAN DEFINITELY SLOW IT DOWN. — STEVE MAXWELL

You can definitely prevent a big loss of mobility

JUST BY FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE DRILLS, YOU CAN KEEP YOURSELF PRETTY AGILE AND SPRY RIGHT UP UNTIL THE END. — STEVE MAXWELL

Cardio where you least expect it

If you go through this whole routine, pretty much exercise-to-exercise, you’ll almost feel like you wrestled a match. It can be used as a substitute when you can’t actually get on the mat and do jiu jitsu.

You’ll see when you try these exercises — and you just flow from one to the other — you get quite a nice light-cardio workout.

In this video:

In this video, Steve will show you how to sit up — and stand up — somewhat effortlessly, although there’s always going to be some effort when you move from the ground to your feet.
Steve explains that when done in high-repetitions, simply getting up and down from the floor is incredibly cardio — this is like the jiu jitsu equivalent of burpees
Learn how to move effortlessly from your back (on the ground) to a standing position
Steve shows drills very helpful for learning to fall backwards on a hard surface. No matter how you do it, falling and rolling is an integral part of martial arts, and a great overall mobility drill for keeping the brain young and plastic
The squat: a really important position for the older athlete.

For all levels

You can play with, and modify, the standing-up-from-the-ground exercise and make the drills your own.

Ground engagement without anxiety. Specific to the senior jiu jitsu player.

A few more words from Steve:

I created this series for the senior jiu jitsu player, that is, guys who are just starting out and over 40 years old, and people starting to get up there in years and finding that they’re beginning to lose their mobility on the mat.

It’s also great if you have an injury and you can’t wrestle live, you can flow from move to move, make combinations, and retain your movement-specific skills for jiu jitsu, even when you can’t get on the mat.

I have used these moves throughout my career, and manged to keep myself moving pretty well, and I think these moves will help you, too.

Any beginners starting out in jiu jitsu — even young ones — should master these basic movement patterns before they even think about starting to live roll.

How hard or easy it is is specifically related to how you and how you move. You can take the intensity up by moving fairly quickly — not explosively, but quickly.
