Karsten Delap - Essential Self-Rescue for Climbers

Check it out: Karsten Delap – Essential Self-Rescue for Climbers

You don’t need to end every climbing emergency with a full-blown helicopter rescue. In this eLearning class, Karsten Delap, an AMGA-certified rock and alpine guide, search-and-rescue team member, and wilderness EMT, will teach you essential self-rescue skills you can practice safely at home, in the gym, or at the crag. You’ll become a responsible climbing partner, allowing you think more quickly, be more efficient, and effectively respond to the most common climbing mishaps. You don’t rise to the occasion; you fall to your training.

At your own pace, you’ll learn the basics of self-rescue. Through instructional videos, detailed photos, and in-depth descriptions, you’ll learn rescue skills like taking over a top belay, how to ascend the rope to your partner if he’s been injured, and proper tandem belay and rappel techniques. Delap will show you, step by step, how to master critical knots and hitches, as well as teach you the intricacies of using various belay devices in a self-rescue situation, and more. You’ll also learn how to analyze common climbing situations (both cragging and multi-pitch) and deploy self-rescue tactics that can help you safely get down—or up—in the event that a rope jams, your climbing partner takes a catastrophic lead fall, or you encounter any other common mishap/entrapment/accident scenario that could otherwise necessitate calling for a third-party rescue. This course will teach you how to think critically and act safely and methodically in an emergency, so you’re prepared with a variety of possible action plans and not scrambling in the moment.
